Video: Behind The Art – Imperfect

I have another peek behind the art journalling scenes for you today, but first I have some news to share!

litabells-NASTORE

That’s right, my digi design business now has a new home – Scrap Orchard! The orchard was the first digi scrap site I ever joined, and to now be selling there is just a dream come true. And to top it off, not only will you be able to find my digi scrap designs there, you’ll soon be able to take part in online mixed media workshops – taught by me! I am beyond thrilled at the chance to do this so stay tuned for details of my first class, coming soon!

But for now, enjoy a peek behind the scenes as I create my page for this weeks Art Squared prompt.

PLEASE NOTE
The audioswap feature has gone a little haywire – there’s meant to be some boppy fun music but all I’m hearing is the noise of me creating. Sorry guys!

I should mention also, that after I had turned off the camera, I took a minute or so to rub away more of the glue design. This worked as a super easy resist technique, so when the glue was rubbed away, I was left with great grungey circles. Love how it worked out!

I’m off to the studio now to get messy and covered in paint. Hope you have fun and get a little creative yourself!

Happy arting!

Thrifty Thursday – Upcycled books

Anyone that knows me knows that I can never resist a bargain, anything vintage, or any form of upcyling. I also cannot stand to waste anything – all those weird odds and ends that most throw away, I will generally find a use for. What can I say, I’m a thrifty girl! Though I am  NOT a hoarder, lets be clear on that lol

Anyway, I recently started using a lot of book text in my artwork, which had me scouring the web looking for a good source of lovely old vintage books. My word, I was NOT prepared for the prices attached, and just couldn’t justify the cost for something that was gonna to be torn, scrunched and covered in paint! So I head to the op shops (that’s thrift stores for my OS friends). I found some absolute gems at next to nothing, and even managed to score a bundle from the half price table!

100_1962 This is only about a 5th of the pile I have stashed under my desk hehehe

I then came home and starting ripping pages out, and thoroughly enjoyed myself. Of course, once you use the papers up, you’ll be left with the covers. I mulled it over, trying to find a way to keep the thriftyness going and then inspiration hit – why not use them in place of canvas panels? And so, a tutorial, of sorts, is born!

What you’ll need:
Thrifted books – choose those that have a hardcover. My favourites are those with a fabric feel to them, as this gives a more realistic canvas look.
Craft knife or scissors
Gesso, paint or paper to cover – whatever your heart desires!

100_1963
Using your knife or scissors, separate the cover from the inner pages.

100_1972
Your cover will most likely have a rough edge, with frayed fabric, and torn paper etc. It is entirely up to you if you wish to neaten this up or leave the rustic look . Btw, don’t throw out that extra spine piece – it makes an awesome bookmark!

100_1975
Prepare your  ‘canvas’ for your project. Cover it in paper, or gesso to create a primed surface, ready for painting etc. You could also leave it as is for a fab vintage look! FYI, I know my gesso’ing here is shoddy. It needs another coat for sure! And no, that’s not mustard in the background – it’s my gesso bottle lol I use Matisse brand (though I am NOT a fan of the quality) and it comes in a big tub that is awkward for me to use, hence the squeezy bottle.

100_1979
You can now decorate as you please! Evidently I’m big on limited palettes and one word sentiments at the moment lol

I hope this little thrifty tip was helpful for you! If you decide to give ti a try PLEASE link me up, I would love to see your creations!

Tuesday Tute – Flower Girl Leaves

While browsing my favourite blogs, I came across this tutorial. Traditionally, flower girls scatter rose petals in the brides path, and while it is quite pretty, why not try something different? Check out the sweet flower girl leaves in this fab tutorial from Janae & Kendra, as seen on A Beautiful Mess.

Tuesday Tute: Crepe Paper Rosettes

I stumbled across this tutorial today, and love how simple it is! Gabriela Delworth created these using crepe paper, but I can see these easily being made with tissue paper, sewing patterns – any thin lightweight paper would work well.

Handmade paper flowers

A couple of weeks ago I came across a tutorial for making paper flowers and since it seemed super easy so I decided to give it a go! I am now addicted – and here are some of the results!

100_1492

I wanted to link you to the tute, but unfortunately the blog is now private so you won’t be able to see it :( So I’ll try to give you a super simple rundown.

You’ll need:
Paper – cardstock is best, or thicker than average patterned paper (lines such as Basic Grey are perfect)
Brads for centers
A spray bottle or dish of water
Flower stencil or punches (or you could print shapes, or freehand)

Cut/punch 9 flowers – 3 large, 3 medium, 3 small. Pierce a hole in the center of each and join them together, with largest on the bottom, then medium, then smallest, rotating each one so that they are not perfectly lined up.
Give the flower a generous spray of water (or dunk it in a dish). You then need to fold each petal toward the center, pinching and scrunching it all together as you go. Spray as often as needed – the paper needs to be fairly pliable for this to work. Continue until all petals have been folded in, and you have what resembles a small rosebud.
Now comes the point where you can make this as neat and tidy or as messy as you want. Start to unfold your little bud petal by petal. Be gentle as it is rather wet. You can flatten the petals out a fair bit, or just unfold them slightly to give a more scrunched, rustic look. You also have the option of unfolding every petal so that you wind up seeing the brad you started with, or you can leave the center petals folded in to resemble a small bud.
Allow plenty of time to dry, or use a heat tool to speed things up. Once they are completely dry you can remove the brad if you like and replace it with bling, buttons, ribbon or anything else you can think of. You could also add glimmermist, stickles etc.

I hope that made some sort of sense to you all lol If you’d like me to take pics for each step, let me know and I’ll pop it on my to do list.

Heading out now to relax with a book or nap. I miss sleep…we used to be such great friends.
