My Story : Craft As Therapy

The craft community is an amazing place, and I have come to make many new friends through the world of Etsy and Twitter etc. One amazing woman I recently ‘met’ is Melissa, owner of Vintage Baby Revival and LadeeBee Supplies. Through her blog, Melissa shares stories of crafters living with mental illness, and how craft has helped them in their struggle. She recently called for guest posters willing to share their story, and I immediately thought, yes, I can do that. I’ve lived with this disease for around 15 years, surely I can write a little blog post telling my story… Little did I know how hard it would be.

Weeks later, I have finally done it. It was emotionally draining, but I did it. And while writing the article, I debated whether or not to share it here. I want my story to help others, but do I really want those I know best to know the truth? I still have my reservations, but I think that sharing my story is a good move, at the moment anyway lol Check back tomorrow and I may have differing views lol

So, if you’d like to read my story, head HERE, to Melissa’s blog, Close Knit. Be sure to check out the links in the sidebar to read the amazing stories of others struggling with mental illness, and finding the way through with craft.

Thank you for sharing Lita. I'm so very glad you are finally getting help. It's terrible terrible that you had to suffer for so long believing that you could just try a little harder and things would get better. I hope you find joy, and I am so happy that crafting makes you feel better. It makes me feel better to look at all the beautiful things you create.

Lita, you are one of the bravest people I know and I applaud you for putting your vulnerability out there like that, because you're right! Your story really can help someone else.

I love you, girl!

I posted this in the comments of your story - and I wanted to post it here too...
Lita, THANK YOU for sharing your experience. I believe that the more we talk about depression and anxiety the less scarey it becomes for others suffering in silence. Reading your story might help one more person talk to someone and get the help they need. I too have suffered on and off most of my life with anxiety and depression. Currently I'm in a 'coping-without-meds' stage, however I know that it is unlikely to last forever. I'm just in a place where the stressors are manageable for a while.
